A Gala celebrating the completion of the project will be held Thursday, August 30th, 7 PM, at the Lansing Art Gallery, 119 North Washington Avenue in downtown Lansing. The event will honor the winning poets and the integration of their poems into the public art landscape in Lansing. It will also feature a video celebrating Lansing’s vitality and emerging creative vision. The reception is free and open to the public.
Background Information: In November 2017, the Lansing Poetry Club received a placemaking grant supported by the City of Lansing, the Lansing Economic Development Corporation, and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. The purpose of the grant was to celebrate four areas of the city—Old Town, REO Town, the Stadium District and the Eastside—through a writing competition where members of the community could share their connection to these places via poetry. The submission phase of the project occurred during March-May with the judging completed in June. Over 76 poems were submitted, with 8 selected as winners.
